A Tale of 2 Admirals - Whyarecarrots' Month 2

Month 2 - COMPLETED

I may have forgotten to do a group photo for this month...

More about this month, and a bonus 2017 recap after the jump:

A brief recap

For those who have not seen the introduction thread (which can be found here),  the goal of this Tale is for me and Firestorm Falcon to clear our backlogs of unpainted Dystopian Wars miniatures. I have pledged to paint 400 points a month for the next 6 months (with 1 "joker" month allowed if I miss my target) to clear that backlog. The tale started at the beginning of November, which means that we are now at the end of month 2.

The month 2 pledge

For my second month I pledged to paint:

  • 1 Zamiec Class Sky Fortress - 190 Points
  • 3 Brandtaucher Class Submarines - 210 points
This was a considerably less straightforward month than month 1. While the submarines were done very quickly, the Zamiec proved to be a challenge. I've never hugely enjoyed painting massive centerpiece models, and this was no exception. The huge amount of detail, particularly on the underside of the model, was quite overwhelming and I often struggled to motivate myself to get painting. The fact that it has broken 3 times in the 2 weeks since I finished painting it doesn't help my opinion of the thing.

That said, this is part of the reason why I started this Tale - it's a very useful motivational tool for those months when I'm really struggling to make progress. Now that I've finished the Zamiec, I am happy with it. It's not my best individual painting, but it's such an imposing model that it's really nice to see it painted up in my colour scheme.

Onto the photos!

The Zamiec is in my opinion one of the most impressive models that Spartan produced

Each of the side-balloons is larger than the PLC's medium blimps, which should give a sense of the size of this thing
I may go back and add some freehand on the decking just to break up the expanse of bare wood
The detailed underside, which gave me so much trouble

By contrast, these were very straightforward to paint, and didn't take long at all
I think these are the three that I painted this month - they got a bit mixed up with the other three painted ones in my case!
The pledge for month 3

Next month, I am potentially being a bit ambitious, as there are a lot of potentially very frustrating things to paint in my planned pledge. That said, these do need to be done at some point, so I may as well bite the bullet and get it done!

For January, I am aiming to paint the following:
  • 1 Asgard Class Heavy Fleet Carrier (plus its 6 assault boats) - 205 points
  • 6 Wachter Class Escorts (3 Prussian, 3 Danish) - 120 points
  • 13 Danish SAS tokens and trays - 65 points
Total: 390

Dystopian Wars in 2017 - a brief review

I thought this would also be a good opportunity to look at what I've actually painted for Dystopian Wars over 2017, and it turned out to be a lot more than I actually thought!

The fleets together
The Prussian Empire (with bonus popcorn)
The Poles and the Danes (and no popcorn)

Looking ahead to 2018, I have a fair few Dystopian Wars models still to finish, along with plans to get back into Infinity, and continue painting some Zombicide characters. If Warcradle's development of the Dystopian Age results in some exciting Dystopian Wars releases, my Dystopian Wars painting queue may get even long!

Thanks for reading as always, and a happy new year!
